The thought manifests something, it’s either positive or negative or somewhere in between. When it’s an excessive amount of negative the body will tighten…fear/stress, whether conscious or unconscious and some kind of pain will occur. It has taken quite some time, but oil pulling has finally gained some popularity in the United States.
Used primarily in Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling is a fantastic oral detoxification procedure that is simply done by swishing a tablespoon of oil (typically coconut oil, olive or sesame oil) in your mouth for 10-20 minutes.
Oil pulling works by cleaning (detoxifying) the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that is needed to prevent cavities and disease.
This unbelievably effective procedure has been used for centuries as a traditional India remedy to:
Most of us cannot even imagine what life would be like without brushing and flossing our teeth everyday. However, in the scheme of things, tooth brushing is relatively, new since nylon bristle toothbrushes didn’t become part of our normal American experience until the late 1930s!
It’s important to remember that, in spite of the fact that most people in American today were all raised with toothbrushes in our mouths, our ancestors didn’t brush their teeth with toothpaste for thousands of years. And, as far as archeological evidence Pyramides of Gizeh – Cairo, Egyptsuggests, most people throughout history lived until a ripe old age with most of their teeth intact and in a strong, healthy state.
Why didn’t their teeth rot?
Well, first of all, they ate real food and didn’t consume processed sugars and grains filled with phytic acid, which destroy tooth enamel. Secondly, they took care of their teeth through natural means like chew sticks that they rubbed against the teeth as has been found in Egyptian tombs dating to 3000 B.C. Third, depending on the culture and region of the world, many people also oil pulled.
Oil Pulling Research
coconut oil jarBy now, you’ve probably heard of the phrase “oil pulling.” Not quite a household name just yet, people in natural health circles are adopting the procedure as part of their daily regimen by the droves because of the hype that is being placed on it about it lately on the Internet.
To date, there are just 7 oil pulling research studies reporting on the health benefits of oil pulling. Although it is unfortunate that science has taken so long to take this ancient art seriously, it IS encouraging to see the literature database grow. I’m excited to read more as researchers catch on to how oil pulling can help transform someone’s life.
The Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, for example, recently highlighted a study that reviewed holistic approaches to oral health and discovered that oil pulling is one of the most effective natural health solutions known to scientists that prevent tooth decay and loss. (1) Praised for curing more than 30 systemic diseases, the authors of this study have some profound things to say about this ancient natural healing practice:
“Oil pulling is a powerful detoxifying Ayurvedic technique that has recently become very popular as a CAM remedy for many different health ailments. Using this method, surgery or medication could be prevented for a number of chronic illnesses. The oil therapy is preventative as well as curative. The exciting aspect of this healing method is its simplicity.
Ayurveda advises oil gargling to purify the entire system; as it holds that each section of the tongue is connected to different organ such as to the kidneys, lungs, liver, heart, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine, similarly to reflexology and TCM. (1)”
I really like this passage because it highlights how the detoxification effect that oil pulling has on the entire body reaches far beyond oral health. This is especially important for people who have conditions that contraindicate brushing such as mouth ulcer, fever, indigestion, those who have tendency to vomit, have asthma, cough, or thirst. (2)
In addition, I found these three studies showing how sesame seed oil pulling affects a wide range of oral health issues particularly helpful as I considered making it a part of my natural health regimen:dental hygiene
According to researchers from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in Tamil Nadu, India, oil pulling reduces Streptococcus mutans bacteria – a significant contributor to tooth decay – in the plaque and saliva of children. (3) In the authors’ words, “Oil pulling can be used as an effective preventive adjunct in maintaining and improving oral health.”
As uncovered by researchers from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in Chennai India, oil pulling can significantly reduced aerobic microorganisms in plaque among children with plaque-induced gingivitis. (4)
From the same researchers in Chennai, oil pulling has been shown to be as effective as mouthwash at improving bad breath and reducing the microorganisms that may cause it. (5)
Why Coconut Oil is the Best Oil to Use
One important note to make is that the studies I referenced above only tested the effects that sesame seed oil had on patients who oil pulled. Being a staple in India, it’s no wonder why many Ayurvedic medicinal practitioners would naturally gravitate toward sesame. However, I would like to suggest using coconut oil instead.
Why?coconut oil on wooden spoon
Because coconut oil has been shown to:
Decrease Wrinkles and Age Spots
Balance Blood Sugar and Improve Energy
Increase HDL and Lower LDL Cholesterol
Because it is highly absorbable, you can experience many of these benefits simply by oil pulling!
Coconut Oil Pulling: How-To
This is how I like to do coconut oil pulling:
Make sure to oil pull first thing in the morning right after you get out of bed before you brush your teeth or drink anything.
Gently swish 1 – 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your mouth and between your teeth for 10-20 minutes making sure that you don’t swallow any of the oil. (Do this gently so you don’t wear out your jaw and cheeks!)
Spit out the oil in the trash (not the sink so it doesn’t clog up the plumbing…ask me how I know) and immediately rinse your mouth out with warm water (use salt water for added antimicrobial properties).
Finally, brush your teeth as normal.
Voila, easy as that!
I recommend oil pulling 3-4x per week with coconut oil and also adding essential oils to your mixture.
Coconut Oil Pulling Guide
As you can see, oil pulling with coconut oil is a simple procedure with very effective results. If 10-20 minutes sounds like a long time simply do oil pulling while in the shower or while driving to work in the morning or while doing work around the house to help pass the time.
Here’s a Quick “How-to” Coconut Oil Pulling Video Demonstration:
Next I want to share with you how you can use essential oils to take your oil pulling benefits to a whole new level!
Essential oil and mint on green background close-upCoconut Oil Pulling with Essential Oils
Essential oils carry some of the most potent antibacterial and anti-fungal properties on the planet, and they can easy, and safely enhance the oil pulling experience. Additionally, as essential oils absorb into your oral mucosa, your body will enjoy the antioxidant and medicinal powers inherent in these potent compounds.
Here are two of my favorite ways to use essential oils during my morning oil pulling routine:
For everyday use: add 3 drops of wild orange, lemon and peppermint with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.
When battling an infection or sickness: Change it up a bit and mix clove oil, cinnamon oil, or tea tree oil as a homeopathic remedy.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s):
1. What age is good for oil pulling?
Sure! Since the oil swished around in the mouth and spit out, then there should be no harm in oil pulling even at a young age. Try a smaller amount of oil though, say about 1/2-1 teaspoon. You would want to make sure they are able to comfortably and it should be an enjoyable experience, not a dreaded one. If they don’t like it, and they need healing for their teeth, then I would focus on adjusting their diet to heal cavities naturally.
2. Can I pull oil if I have fillings?
According to the Coconut Research Center (6),
“Oil pulling will not and cannot loosen properly placed crowns or fillings. The only time oil pulling will affect crowns or fillings is if the teeth underneath have decayed and are full of infection. In this case, the foundation on which the crowns or fillings are secured to is badly decayed and unable to hold the dental material. Oil pulling removes bacteria, pus, and mucus. It cannot pull out porcelain, amalgam, or composite dental materials from the teeth.”
The only reason that a filling will become loose is if you have a rot or infection in the tooth. Then you will want to address this issue to keep the infection from spreading to your body.
3. Why do I have to oil pull in the morning?
You don’t. The best time to oil pull is in the morning on an empty stomach, but you can certainly try other times during the day or before eating.
4. Why do I have to oil pull for so long?
When you oil pull, you are actually using up the oil in the process of swishing the oil. It will become watery and sometimes milky after about 15 minutes. If you pull with less oil you may notice it change texture sooner, but you want to make sure you have enough oil to really clean your mouth and teeth.
5. How long does it take to see a difference with my teeth and mouth?
Within one week, most people notice a cleaner mouth and change in their breath. Within a month, some people have experienced dental repair or healthier gums.
6. Are there oil pulling side effects or symptoms?
– Every person is different. For some people they may have a release of mucous in their throat or nose as the swishing can release your sinuses and cause drainage. This is harmless, but if it is uncomfortable to you, then you may want to blow your nose before oil pulling.
– Also some people experience jaw soreness. If this happens, try swishing more gently and don’t pull between your teeth as hard, or maybe cut back a few minutes down to 8-10 minutes, and then build back up once you get adjusted to this exercise.
– Occasionally, oil pulling can trigger the gag reflex in some people. If this happens, then try leaning your head forward just slightly and using a little bit less oil. Also warming the oil a little can make it thinner and less likely to cause any gagging.
7. Can I oil pull while pregnant?
Because you spit out the toxins that are “pulled” out when swishing, there should not be any harm in oil pulling while pregnant. In fact, it can be a soothing way to clean your teeth if you experience any gum sensitivity.
I personally use the Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil found here.
When you try coconut oil pulling, let me know what you think? Do you have any essential oils that you like?
You would think ouch! Right? Not at all, without any doubt cupping therapy has been a life saver for me. I would say nothing can go deeper into a tight muscle thanking what I call drag cupping which you can see the cups below. These cups are made out of silicone or the cupping you see over to our left in the picture. Please feel free to call me to tell you the wonderful benefits of cupping therapy today at 609.647.0049
Cupping Therapy, Cups made out of silicone
Cupping therapy is a process of suctioning or vacuuming sections of the body’s meridian system for the purpose of drawing out toxins, pain management, increasing blood flow, relaxation, and promoting a healthier flow of chi energies.
Often attributed to the Chinese the origins of cupping unknown. The practice of cupping has been noted through ancient Egypt, Greece, by Native Americans, and throughout Europe.
Using cupping as a therapy was first documented in writings by Chinese alchemist Ge Hong. As a result, cupping is sometimes called Chinese Cupping Therapy. Certainly, the Chinese have used cupping therapy extensively, it is categorized as a treatment within the TMC (Traditional Chinese Medicine), system of Eastern healing.
Cupping Therapy Complements Massage and Acupuncture
The massage therapist or acupuncturist will apply massage oil or baby oil to your skin prior to placement of the cups. The air inside each cup is heated with a flame prior to placing the cup upside down directly onto the skin. As a result, a suction sensation occurs and attaches to the body. The cups are left on the body for a few minutes.
Typically, the cups are placed on the client’s back, but they are sometimes positioned on other parts of the body such as the stomach, thighs, and neck.
Circular welt marks and purplish discolorations, an effect of the air pressure, could remain on the skin for up to fifteen days following your treatment.
Traditional VS Modern Day Cups
Traditional cups used in cupping therapy are made of glass or bamboo, also hollowed out animal horns. Today, there are a variety of cupping sets on the market, primarily made of glass or plastic. They incorporate the use of magnets and a vacuum pump and magnets in leu of using a flame.
The practice of using silicone cups is called baguanfa.
Ailments Treated by Cupping Therapy Include:

I find it very refreshing that the awareness is coming to fruition with knowledge of the foods we eat, exercise, meditation, yoga and varying exercises. I do believe that holistic ways of healing ourselves and staying healthy without conventional medicine is the answer. Massage Therapy is so, so important and is no longer a frill we need it! Here is The self help part that we all need to know and do so…. get ready to take action! As a massage therapist and holistic practitioner of 20 years I would like to share tools for self help, that help us maintain a pain-free body.
I find that even though there is greater awareness we wait until our pain gets to a chronic condition then we might take action. I find the steps usually start with a Doctor’s visit that may include pain meds, muscle relaxers, steroid shots or the xray… followed by an MRI. Then we bounce around to Physical Therapists whom never seem to mention finding a good massage therapist. Hummmmm? We then move to specialists of the back or whatever the issue is. I say, “what about the rest of my body attached to that back”? I just get mind Boggled! Then I get the phone call that usually will start with, “All of the sudden I started getting the sharp pain” or “You are my last resort, nothing else worked”, can I see you NOW! What I see is ignoring our bodies that are giving us subtle warnings, then the warnings get louder and we still ignore the warning and surprise, we can’t move our necks or get out of bed. Then we go to “THE DOCTOR”. That is all well and good. I think Doctors should be used to rule out major issues from not listening to our bodies.
The answer for me most of the time is very holistic and simple solutions, if I am open minded and really want the solution to the problem. I’m writing this article in hopes that we can learn to take action before getting into chronic pain or chronic anything. Through these 20 years of being a therapeutic massage therapist / healer I see the importance of eating right, exercise, yoga, meditation, therapeutic massage from Suzanne Newman (ME) :), acupuncture from Mimi Baker, owner of Princeton Day Spa, chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Ari Cohn of Princeton Chiropractic and Wellness Center, the best of the best personal trainer Beth Kais who finds the imbalances in your body and helps you to learn how to correct them. Nicole Breitman a talented health coach, who helped me with a liver , gallbladder cleanse and I could not believe the amount of gallstones I passed it truly was amazing and so is Nicole! She has so much important health information to share please connect with her and stay healthy!
Dr Warner Hoff of Ewing Chiropractic another talent Chiropractor who not only works his magic on us humans but, saves the lives of cats, dogs, horses and any other animal that needs adjustments. We tend to think that animals don’t have the same problems as humans well it is even worse and I have witnessed it with my cats compressed neck from jumping off of high places. Dogs over doing it causing hip problems. Not only was my cat, Tia’s neck compressed but this also caused an ear blockage which, was treated by vets with tons of antibiotics and nothing! Doctor Hoff adjusted her neck for a period of time and the ear problem was gone! My pug, as we know pugs have breathing problems and issues with their back legs due to being bowlegged and most pugs I see are horribly over because of their owners! He tells it like it is and your pet has a great chance of adding many years to its life. Thank you Doc I love you! Here are some traffic people who will help you in so many ways so breathing deeply, be mindful, surround yourself with good friends, great healers and lots of hard core laughter.
Okay let us take a look at the average person sits for at least eight hours in their offices, then drive for up to an 2 hour getting to and from home. What most people don’t realize is that low back pain is usually caused by tight glutes, (your butt go into spasm). The shoulders and neck are also area’s that become chronic with my clients. This comes also sitting for extended periods of time, stress, driving and not breathing deeply enough. We tighten ourselves up and do not realize it. What we are going to here is look at what you can do to help these issues in between getting massage therapy.
I am going to show a list of pictures of the items I use, links of where you can buy these items and how to use them. We will start first with the feet. I think we underestimate the toll we take on her feet. One good way of stretching out the tendons is using a golf ball. This is done by statically standing on the golf ball with one foot and pressing down into the golf ball. Then moving the ball to another area of the bottom of the foot. The tends to be painful but once you do one foot you will see how much better that what feels in comparison to the foot that hasn’t been worked on. This is especially good for runners and people stand on their feet all day. Another great product is The Yamuna Foot Savers. I LOVE these! https://yamunabodyrolling.com/store/body_focus/feet/?show_item=24
YAMUNA® FOOT SAVER KIT
Most of us spent up to eight hours or more sitting. First of all we are not made to sit all day. This puts tremendous pressure on the spine. What makes it even worse are the chairs that most people sit in all day. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to get an ergonomically correct chair, especially important at work because of the long hours. There are also computer desks that are made for standing up while you are working. I spent close to $600 on a chair myself and my shoulders no longer get as tight and I feel much less compression in my back and neck.
It is those long hours sitting in driving that tighten up the gluteal muscles (your butt). Doing this day after day, week after week, lower back pain starts. Please do not wait until it becomes chronic. Get yourself a lacrosse ball or a tennis ball. I prefer a lacrosse ball, I feel that it goes a lot deeper into the glutes and hip flexors. All you need is a yoga mat and your ball. You lie on your side, in a low side arm plank position and lower yourself onto the ball all along each side of your butt and up along the hip area.
Please pay attention to gradually go into the ball using once again static pressure. Do not roll the ball. Lift yourself up and move your body onto the ball all around the glutes/butt and hip area. This is going to hurt because you’re going into trigger points. What is a trigger point?
Trigger Point / Myotherapy Definition: Trigger point myotherapy also known as neuromuscular therapy or sometimes massage therapy consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm. Pressure is applied with the fingers, knuckles, and/or elbow in ten to thirty second intervals to effectively alleviate the muscle spasm. Neuromuscular therapy works by relaxing the muscle in order to release stored lactic acid and encourage blood and oxygen circulation to the muscle to avoid the production of more lactic acid. The therapeutic pressure and massage typically produces initial soreness and “good pain” in muscle tissue. http://www.spine-health.com/glossary/trigger-point-myotherapy
I can not live with out this on my car seat and at home. We sit far to much and with this wonderful Tush Cush we can take the compression of chairs and car seats off of our spine. We do not sell things that do not work. This is a must have for long commuting and office work chairs if you already do not have a standing desk, which I think is a MUST have to save our backs and compressing our diaphragm. We also have this at the office! http://www.tushcush.com/html/faq.html
The AB WHEEL
I’ve read several reviews here with people being confused or disappointed, but I think perhaps expectations were different. First off, I’m not a trained professional, but I’ve been exercising for years and I pay close attention to proper form for the most effective effort. I’ll try to explain how this works and what to expect.
— CORE MUSCLES WORKED WITH AN AB WHEEL: Shoulders, arms, upper and lower back, abs (all sections)
— WHAT TO EXPECT ON QUALITY: The quality on these things doesn’t have to be fancy – it has a simple use and just has to be functional. Two wheels are better than one, however. The wheels are solid plastic/rubber and the grips are similar. Are the grips terribly comfortable? No, but they’re not bad either and you aren’t using it for hours at a time -just minutes. Wrap some tennis racquet grip around them for added comfort if you want more, but it’s really not needed. This is a basic tool and doesn’t need to be made of expensive materials. The bar through the middle is solid metal (not sure if there is a weight limit but I’d guess at about 200lbs).
— PUTTING IT TOGETHER: It arrives in a box as two separate wheels, a metal bar, two rubber handles and a single sheet of instructions. Place the bar through the wheels and center them as best as you can. Then slide/wiggle/twist one handle all the way onto one end of the bar (I didn’t need grease – it went on pretty easily, yet snug). Then try to line up the grip of the other handle and slide that onto the other side of the bar with the wheels in the middle. Push on the ends of the handles to make sure they’re on all the way. You will be able to twist the grips a little to line them up perfectly. Putting it together took me only a couple of minutes.
— USING IT (BASIC): Using the Ab Wheel is simple, but really works the abs if done correctly. This simple devise helps create the line down the middle of your abs for that nice six pack! Kneel on the floor with one hand on each handle and the wheel positioned on the floor, centered before you. Without arching your back (keep it straight and keep your head straight too – don’t look up or drop your head down) slowly roll the wheel away from your knees in a straight line before you. Your body moves forward with the wheel, away from your knees
— this is KEY to making this move effective! Your weight is supported via your hands on the bar and by your knees (and a straight back). The further you can stretch your arms out before you and the further you can lean away from your knees the more you will work the core muscles in your abs. When you’ve rolled out as far as you safely can, reverse and roll back up to the starting position (this should be hard!).
Line your body up facing a wall (knees 2-3 ft from the wall) and roll out toward the wall if you want something there to help you stop rolling. Line up further and further away as you get stronger. You may not be able roll out more than 2-3 feet at first but that’s okay. (When I stop my abs/hips are about 10-12 inches from the floor. You want to aim for about a 45 degree angle from your knees to your hips and then a countering 45 degree angle from your hands on the ab wheel to your shoulders.
Think of making a bridge with your body where your knees are one support on one side of the water and the wheel is the other support on the other side of the river/body of water. Again, the farther you can stretch out, the more difficult the workout, but be careful and don’t push too hard too fast or you’ll tear something! Use your head and be conservative at first. Beginners should probably start with 1-2 sets of 5-10 reps and work on rolling out further as you become stronger. I’m trying 2 sets of 10 reps and my abs are SORE after 2 days of this!! 🙂
I would only buy Trigger Point Products others wear out quickly! These foam rollers by far are the best. This is for in-between Sports Massages from me, not a replacement by any means! I also sell these at the office. This is one of the most important products you can buy, the results are amazing. If there is one of all the above beside massage this is the one I would pick as being the most important if I had to, but they all are all so, so helpful. Here is a great YouTube video. This is what I show my clients and know you can watch it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO1VRTv-GJshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkqu_WQrfKg
Then my all time favorite that I will not live without because of a failed fusion in my neck and the chronic pain I have is The Thera-therm Digital Moist Heating Pad. You need to buy the largest size and I promise you will not regret it! They will be available at the Princeton Day Spa soon to purchase! Enjoy the information and stay flexible and Breathe!

Pure Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is apparently a powerful de-toxifier and is extremely good for gums and teeth, a dentist told one person her gums are now so healthy! I plan to start myself soon:
Step 1: First thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, and before drinking any liquids (including water), pour exactly one tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth. Use one teaspoon for children old enough to be able to swish it without swallowing it – most sources suggest an age of five. If you wear dentures, oil pulling is done with the dentures out of your mouth. Some people choose to accelerate oil pulling’s effects by doing the procedure two or three times per day. It should be done before meals or several hours after a meal, on an empty stomach.
Step 2: Swish the oil around in your mouth (without swallowing it) for about twenty minutes. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth. Sip and suck it through the teeth. Use a gentle chewing motion from time to time. Don’t tilt your head back to gargle. Keep swishing. If your cheek or jaw muscles get sore while swishing, you are putting too much effort into it. Relax your jaw muscles and use your tongue to help move the liquid around the inside of your mouth. When you do this correctly, you will feel very comfortable. Soon it will become second nature. You will find that the oil starts to get watery during the first minutes, as your saliva mixes with it.
Step 3: As the end of the oil pulling session approaches, the oil/saliva mixture in your mouth becomes thicker. This is quite normal, since it is pulling out toxins from your body. When twenty minutes are up, spit out the oil into the toilet. (It is best if you do not spit into the sink.) Do not be alarmed if it looks yellow or whitish – this also is normal
Step 4: Rinse out your mouth twice with warm water. and spit into the toilet. One method is to rinse and spit with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Once again, do not swallow. The hydrogen peroxide is very effective in rinsing out any toxins or organisms which may be left in the mouth.
Step 5 : Brush your teeth. Use a damp toothbrush with a small amount of baking soda. A small amount goes a long way, and minimizes the abrasive effect of the baking soda. The baking soda will normalize the pH of the mouth.
