It has taken quite some time, but oil pulling has finally gained some popularity in the United States.

Used primarily in Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling is a fantastic oral detoxification procedure that is simply done by swishing a tablespoon of oil (typically coconut oil, olive or sesame oil) in your mouth for 10-20 minutes.

Oil pulling works by cleaning (detoxifying) the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that is needed to prevent cavities and disease.

This unbelievably effective procedure has been used for centuries as a traditional India remedy to:

Cures tooth decay
Kills bad breath
Heals bleeding gums
Prevents heart disease
Reduces inflammation
Whitens teeth
Soothes throat dryness
Prevents cavities
Heals cracked lips
Boosts Immune System
Improves acne
Strengthens gums and jaw

Oil Pulling History

Most of us cannot even imagine what life would be like without brushing and flossing our teeth everyday. However, in the scheme of things, tooth brushing is relatively, new since nylon bristle toothbrushes didn’t become part of our normal American experience until the late 1930s!

It’s important to remember that, in spite of the fact that most people in American today were all raised with toothbrushes in our mouths, our ancestors didn’t brush their teeth with toothpaste for thousands of years. And, as far as archeological evidence Pyramides of Gizeh – Cairo, Egyptsuggests, most people throughout history lived until a ripe old age with most of their teeth intact and in a strong, healthy state.

Why didn’t their teeth rot?

Well, first of all, they ate real food and didn’t consume processed sugars and grains filled with phytic acid, which destroy tooth enamel. Secondly, they took care of their teeth through natural means like chew sticks that they rubbed against the teeth as has been found in Egyptian tombs dating to 3000 B.C. Third, depending on the culture and region of the world, many people also oil pulled.

Oil Pulling Research

coconut oil jarBy now, you’ve probably heard of the phrase “oil pulling.” Not quite a household name just yet, people in natural health circles are adopting the procedure as part of their daily regimen by the droves because of the hype that is being placed on it about it lately on the Internet.

To date, there are just 7 oil pulling research studies reporting on the health benefits of oil pulling. Although it is unfortunate that science has taken so long to take this ancient art seriously, it IS encouraging to see the literature database grow. I’m excited to read more as researchers catch on to how oil pulling can help transform someone’s life.

The Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, for example, recently highlighted a study that reviewed holistic approaches to oral health and discovered that oil pulling is one of the most effective natural health solutions known to scientists that prevent tooth decay and loss. (1) Praised for curing more than 30 systemic diseases, the authors of this study have some profound things to say about this ancient natural healing practice:

“Oil pulling is a powerful detoxifying Ayurvedic technique that has recently become very popular as a CAM remedy for many different health ailments. Using this method, surgery or medication could be prevented for a number of chronic illnesses. The oil therapy is preventative as well as curative. The exciting aspect of this healing method is its simplicity.

Ayurveda advises oil gargling to purify the entire system; as it holds that each section of the tongue is connected to different organ such as to the kidneys, lungs, liver, heart, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine, similarly to reflexology and TCM. (1)”

I really like this passage because it highlights how the detoxification effect that oil pulling has on the entire body reaches far beyond oral health. This is especially important for people who have conditions that contraindicate brushing such as mouth ulcer, fever, indigestion, those who have tendency to vomit, have asthma, cough, or thirst. (2)

In addition, I found these three studies showing how sesame seed oil pulling affects a wide range of oral health issues particularly helpful as I considered making it a part of my natural health regimen:dental hygiene

According to researchers from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in Tamil Nadu, India, oil pulling reduces Streptococcus mutans bacteria – a significant contributor to tooth decay – in the plaque and saliva of children. (3) In the authors’ words, “Oil pulling can be used as an effective preventive adjunct in maintaining and improving oral health.”
As uncovered by researchers from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in Chennai India, oil pulling can significantly reduced aerobic microorganisms in plaque among children with plaque-induced gingivitis. (4)
From the same researchers in Chennai, oil pulling has been shown to be as effective as mouthwash at improving bad breath and reducing the microorganisms that may cause it. (5)
Why Coconut Oil is the Best Oil to Use

One important note to make is that the studies I referenced above only tested the effects that sesame seed oil had on patients who oil pulled. Being a staple in India, it’s no wonder why many Ayurvedic medicinal practitioners would naturally gravitate toward sesame. However, I would like to suggest using coconut oil instead.

Why?coconut oil on wooden spoon

Because coconut oil has been shown to:

Balance Hormones
Kill Candida
Improve Digestion
Moisturize Skin
Reduce Cellulite
Decrease Wrinkles and Age Spots
Balance Blood Sugar and Improve Energy
Improve Alzheimer’s
Increase HDL and Lower LDL Cholesterol
Burn Fat
Because it is highly absorbable, you can experience many of these benefits simply by oil pulling!

Coconut Oil Pulling: How-To

This is how I like to do coconut oil pulling:

Make sure to oil pull first thing in the morning right after you get out of bed before you brush your teeth or drink anything.
Gently swish 1 – 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your mouth and between your teeth for 10-20 minutes making sure that you don’t swallow any of the oil. (Do this gently so you don’t wear out your jaw and cheeks!)
Spit out the oil in the trash (not the sink so it doesn’t clog up the plumbing…ask me how I know) and immediately rinse your mouth out with warm water (use salt water for added antimicrobial properties).
Finally, brush your teeth as normal.
Voila, easy as that!
I recommend oil pulling 3-4x per week with coconut oil and also adding essential oils to your mixture.

Coconut Oil Pulling Guide

As you can see, oil pulling with coconut oil is a simple procedure with very effective results. If 10-20 minutes sounds like a long time simply do oil pulling while in the shower or while driving to work in the morning or while doing work around the house to help pass the time.

Here’s a Quick “How-to” Coconut Oil Pulling Video Demonstration:

Next I want to share with you how you can use essential oils to take your oil pulling benefits to a whole new level!

Essential oil and mint on green background close-upCoconut Oil Pulling with Essential Oils

Essential oils carry some of the most potent antibacterial and anti-fungal properties on the planet, and they can easy, and safely enhance the oil pulling experience. Additionally, as essential oils absorb into your oral mucosa, your body will enjoy the antioxidant and medicinal powers inherent in these potent compounds.

Here are two of my favorite ways to use essential oils during my morning oil pulling routine:

For everyday use: add 3 drops of wild orange, lemon and peppermint with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.
When battling an infection or sickness: Change it up a bit and mix clove oil, cinnamon oil, or tea tree oil as a homeopathic remedy.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s):

1. What age is good for oil pulling?

Sure! Since the oil swished around in the mouth and spit out, then there should be no harm in oil pulling even at a young age. Try a smaller amount of oil though, say about 1/2-1 teaspoon. You would want to make sure they are able to comfortably and it should be an enjoyable experience, not a dreaded one. If they don’t like it, and they need healing for their teeth, then I would focus on adjusting their diet to heal cavities naturally.

2. Can I pull oil if I have fillings?

According to the Coconut Research Center (6),

“Oil pulling will not and cannot loosen properly placed crowns or fillings. The only time oil pulling will affect crowns or fillings is if the teeth underneath have decayed and are full of infection. In this case, the foundation on which the crowns or fillings are secured to is badly decayed and unable to hold the dental material. Oil pulling removes bacteria, pus, and mucus. It cannot pull out porcelain, amalgam, or composite dental materials from the teeth.”

The only reason that a filling will become loose is if you have a rot or infection in the tooth. Then you will want to address this issue to keep the infection from spreading to your body.

3. Why do I have to oil pull in the morning?

You don’t. The best time to oil pull is in the morning on an empty stomach, but you can certainly try other times during the day or before eating.

4. Why do I have to oil pull for so long?

When you oil pull, you are actually using up the oil in the process of swishing the oil. It will become watery and sometimes milky after about 15 minutes. If you pull with less oil you may notice it change texture sooner, but you want to make sure you have enough oil to really clean your mouth and teeth.

5. How long does it take to see a difference with my teeth and mouth?

Within one week, most people notice a cleaner mouth and change in their breath. Within a month, some people have experienced dental repair or healthier gums.

6. Are there oil pulling side effects or symptoms?

– Every person is different. For some people they may have a release of mucous in their throat or nose as the swishing can release your sinuses and cause drainage. This is harmless, but if it is uncomfortable to you, then you may want to blow your nose before oil pulling.

– Also some people experience jaw soreness. If this happens, try swishing more gently and don’t pull between your teeth as hard, or maybe cut back a few minutes down to 8-10 minutes, and then build back up once you get adjusted to this exercise.

– Occasionally, oil pulling can trigger the gag reflex in some people. If this happens, then try leaning your head forward just slightly and using a little bit less oil. Also warming the oil a little can make it thinner and less likely to cause any gagging.

7. Can I oil pull while pregnant?

Because you spit out the toxins that are “pulled” out when swishing, there should not be any harm in oil pulling while pregnant. In fact, it can be a soothing way to clean your teeth if you experience any gum sensitivity.

I personally use the Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil found here.

When you try coconut oil pulling, let me know what you think? Do you have any essential oils that you like?

Ready…..Action!

back-dry-brush-copy

I find it very refreshing that the awareness is coming to fruition with knowledge of the foods we eat, exercise, meditation, yoga and varying exercises. I do believe that holistic ways of healing ourselves and staying healthy without conventional medicine is the answer. Massage Therapy is so, so important and is no longer a frill we need it!  Here is The self help part that we all need to know and do so…. get ready to take action! As a massage therapist and holistic practitioner of 20 years I would like to share tools for self help, that help us maintain a pain-free body.

I find that even though there is greater awareness we wait until our pain gets to a chronic condition then we might take action. I find the steps usually start with a Doctor’s visit that may include pain meds, muscle relaxers, steroid shots or the xray… followed by an MRI. Then we bounce around to Physical Therapists whom never seem to mention finding a good massage therapist. Hummmmm? We then move to specialists of the back or whatever the issue is. I say, “what about the rest of my body attached to that back”? I just get mind Boggled! Then I get the phone call that usually will start with, “All of the sudden I started getting the sharp pain” or “You are my last resort, nothing else worked”, can I see you NOW! What I see is ignoring  our bodies that are giving us subtle warnings, then the warnings get louder and we still ignore the warning and surprise, we can’t move our necks or get out of bed. Then we go to “THE DOCTOR”. That is all well and good. I think Doctors should be used to rule out major issues from not listening to our bodies.

The answer for me most of the time is very holistic and simple solutions, if I am open minded and really want the solution to the problem. I’m writing this article in hopes that we can learn to take action before getting into chronic pain or chronic anything. Through these 20 years of being a therapeutic massage therapist / healer I see the importance of eating right, exercise, yoga, meditation, therapeutic massage from Suzanne Newman (ME) :), acupuncture from Mimi Baker, owner of Princeton Day Spa, chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Ari Cohn of Princeton Chiropractic and Wellness Center, the best of the best personal trainer Beth Kais who finds the imbalances in your body and helps you to learn how to correct them. Beth comes directly to your home and gives 100% of her talent! Nicole Breitman a talented health coach, who helped me with a liver , gallbladder cleanse and I could not believe the amount of gallstones I passed it truly was amazing and so is Nicole! She has so much important health information to share please connect with her and stay healthy!

Dr Warner Hoff  of Ewing Chiropractic another talent Chiropractor who not only works his magic on us humans but, saves the lives of cats, dogs, horses and any other animal that needs adjustments. We tend to think that animals don’t have the same problems as humans well it is even worse and I have witnessed it with my cats compressed neck from jumping off of high places.  Dogs over doing it causing hip problems. Not only was my cat, Tia’s neck compressed but this also caused an ear blockage which, was treated by vets with tons of antibiotics and nothing! Doctor Hoff adjusted her neck for a period of time and the ear problem was gone! My pug, as we know pugs have breathing problems and issues with their back legs due to being bowlegged and most pugs I see are horribly over because of their owners! He tells it like it is and your pet has a great chance of adding many years to its life. Thank you Doc I love you! Here are some traffic people who will help you in so many ways so breathing deeply, be mindful, surround yourself with good friends, great healers and  lots of hard core laughter.

Okay let us take a look at the average person sits for at least eight hours in their offices, then drive for up to an 2 hour getting to and from home. What most people don’t realize is that low back pain is usually caused by tight glutes, (your butt go into spasm). The shoulders and neck are also area’s that become chronic with my clients. This comes also sitting for extended periods of time, stress, driving and not breathing deeply enough. We tighten ourselves up and do not realize it. What we are going to here is look at what you can do to help these issues in between getting massage therapy.

I am going to show a list of pictures of the items I use, links of where you can buy these items and how to use them. We will start first with the feet. I think we underestimate the toll we take on her feet. One good way of stretching out the tendons is using a golf ball. This is done by statically standing on the golf ball with one foot and pressing down into the golf ball. Then moving the ball to another area of the bottom of the foot. The tends to be painful but once you do one foot you will see how much better that what feels in comparison to the foot that hasn’t been worked on. This is especially good for runners and people stand on their feet all day. Another great product is The Yamuna Foot Savers. I LOVE these! https://yamunabodyrolling.com/store/body_focus/feet/?show_item=24

Most of us spent up to eight hours or more sitting. First of all we are not made to sit all day. This puts tremendous pressure on the spine. What makes it even worse are the chairs that most people sit in all day. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to get an ergonomically correct chair, especially important at work because of the long hours. There are also computer desks that are made for standing up while you are working. I spent close to $600 on a chair myself and my shoulders no longer get as tight and I feel much less compression in my back and neck.

It is those long hours sitting in driving that tighten up the gluteal muscles (your butt). Doing this day after day, week after week, lower back pain starts. Please do not wait until it becomes chronic. Get yourself a lacrosse ball or a tennis ball. I prefer a lacrosse ball, I feel that it goes a lot deeper into the glutes and hip flexors. All you need is a yoga mat and your ball. You lie on your side, in a low side arm plank position and lower yourself onto the ball all along each side of your butt and up along the hip area.

Please pay attention to gradually go into the ball using once again static pressure. Do not roll the ball. Lift yourself up and move your body onto the ball all around the glutes/butt and hip area. This is going to hurt because you’re going into trigger points.   What is a trigger point?

Trigger Point / Myotherapy Definition: Trigger point myotherapy also known as neuromuscular therapy or sometimes massage therapy consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm. Pressure is applied with the fingers, knuckles, and/or elbow in ten to thirty second intervals to effectively alleviate the muscle spasm. Neuromuscular therapy works by relaxing the muscle in order to release stored lactic acid and encourage blood and oxygen circulation to the muscle to avoid the production of more lactic acid. The therapeutic pressure and massage typically produces initial soreness and “good pain” in muscle tissue. http://www.spine-health.com/glossary/trigger-point-myotherapy

We also have this at the office!  http://www.tushcush.com/html/faq.html

The AB WHEEL

I’ve read several reviews here with people being confused or disappointed, but I think perhaps expectations were different. First off, I’m not a trained professional, but I’ve been exercising for years and I pay close attention to proper form for the most effective effort. I’ll try to explain how this works and what to expect.

— CORE MUSCLES WORKED WITH AN AB WHEEL: Shoulders, arms, upper and lower back, abs (all sections)

—   WHAT TO EXPECT ON QUALITY: The quality on these things doesn’t have to be fancy – it has a simple use and just has to be functional. Two wheels are better than one, however. The wheels are solid plastic/rubber and the grips are similar. Are the grips terribly comfortable? No, but they’re not bad either and you aren’t using it for hours at a time -just minutes. Wrap some tennis racquet grip around them for added comfort if you want more, but it’s really not needed. This is a basic tool and doesn’t need to be made of expensive materials. The bar through the middle is solid metal (not sure if there is a weight limit but I’d guess at about 200lbs).

— PUTTING IT TOGETHER: It arrives in a box as two separate wheels, a metal bar, two rubber handles and a single sheet of instructions. Place the bar through the wheels and center them as best as you can. Then slide/wiggle/twist one handle all the way onto one end of the bar (I didn’t need grease – it went on pretty easily, yet snug). Then try to line up the grip of the other handle and slide that onto the other side of the bar with the wheels in the middle. Push on the ends of the handles to make sure they’re on all the way. You will be able to twist the grips a little to line them up perfectly. Putting it together took me only a couple of minutes.

— USING IT (BASIC): Using the Ab Wheel is simple, but really works the abs if done correctly. This simple devise helps create the line down the middle of your abs for that nice six pack! Kneel on the floor with one hand on each handle and the wheel positioned on the floor, centered before you. Without arching your back (keep it straight and keep your head straight too – don’t look up or drop your head down) slowly roll the wheel away from your knees in a straight line before you. Your body moves forward with the wheel, away from your knees

— this is KEY to making this move effective! Your weight is supported via your hands on the bar and by your knees (and a straight back). The further you can stretch your arms out before you and the further you can lean away from your knees the more you will work the core muscles in your abs. When you’ve rolled out as far as you safely can, reverse and roll back up to the starting position (this should be hard!).

Line your body up facing a wall (knees 2-3 ft from the wall) and roll out toward the wall if you want something there to help you stop rolling. Line up further and further away as you get stronger. You may not be able roll out more than 2-3 feet at first but that’s okay. (When I stop my abs/hips are about 10-12 inches from the floor.   You want to aim for about a 45 degree angle from your knees to your hips and then a countering 45 degree angle from your hands on the ab wheel to your shoulders.

Think of making a bridge with your body where your knees are one support on one side of the water and the wheel is the other support on the other side of the river/body of water. Again, the farther you can stretch out, the more difficult the workout, but be careful and don’t push too hard too fast or you’ll tear something! Use your head and be conservative at first. Beginners should probably start with 1-2 sets of 5-10 reps and work on rolling out further as you become stronger. I’m trying 2 sets of 10 reps and my abs are SORE after 2 days of this!! 🙂

It’s IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR BACK STRAIGHT and to not arch it as you roll out. You can hurt yourself if you do this move incorrectly. The wheel comes with some basic instructions that show you the proper form. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! http://www.livestrong.com/video/1000248-use-rolling-wheel-knees-abs/

Foam Roller

The Foam Roller

I would only buy Trigger Point Products others wear out quickly! These foam rollers by far are the best. This is for in-between Sports Massages from me, not a replacement by any means! I also sell these at the office. This is one of the most important products you can buy, the results are amazing. If there is one of all the above beside massage this is the one I would pick as being the most important if I had to, but they all are all so, so helpful. Here is a great YouTube video. This is what I show my clients and know you can watch it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO1VRTv-GJs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkqu_WQrfKg

Then my all time favorite that I will not live without because of a failed fusion in my neck and the chronic pain I have is The       Thera-therm Digital Moist Heating Pad. You need to buy the largest size and I promise you will not regret it! They will be available at the Princeton Day Spa soon to purchase! Enjoy the information and stay flexible and Breathe!

Seven Things to Tell Your Friends

AboutGMOs

Farmers and eaters around the country and the world are watching the Nov. 6 election in California with bated breath.

Will Proposition 37 — requiring labeling of GMOs in our food — pass? Note that even China requires labeling! But here in the U.S., GMOs took off in the 1990s with no public debate, and today they’re in most processed foods, making Americans the world’s GMO guinea pigs.

We know it’s easy to get sunk by “information overload” and agribusiness advertising. So far the largest GMO maker, Monsanto, and other industry giants have plowed at least $35 million into keeping us in the dark.

To help us think straight, we’ve prepared seven points to consider and share with your friends — all backed by authoritative studies. Here’s what they reveal:

1. GMOs have never undergone standard testing or regulation for human safety. And now that they’re in 70 percent of processed foods, it’s extremely difficult for scientists to isolate their health risks.

2. But we know that GMOs have proven harmful in animal studies
. A 2009 reviewof 19 studies found mammals fed GM corn or soy developed “liver and kidney problems” that could mark the “onset of chronic diseases.” Most were 90-day studies. In a new two-year study, rats fed GM corn developed two to three times more tumors — some bigger than a quarter of their total body weight — and these tumors appeared much earlier than in rats fed non-GM corn. Among scientists, the study has its defenders and critics, but even the critics underscore that we need more long-term studies.

3. And the most widely used GMOs are paired with an herbicide linked to serious health risks. GM crops — Roundup Ready soy and corn — are treated with the herbicide glyphosate, which in exposed humans has been associated with DNA damage. In the lab, it’s proven toxic to human liver cells.

4. The consequences of GMO technology are inherently unpredictable. Inserting a single gene can result in multiple, unintended DNA changes and mutations. “Unintended effects are common in all cases where GE [genetic engineering] techniques are used,” warn scientists. One such environmental consequence — genetic contamination of other plants — is already documented. Note that unlike food, once released into the environment, seeds can’t be “recalled“!

5. GMO makers intimidate and silence farmers and scientists. GMO corporations use patents and intellectual property rights to sue farmersblock research, and threaten investigators. “For a decade,” protested Scientific American editors in 2009, GMO companies “have explicitly forbidden the use of the seeds for any independent research,” so “it is impossible to verify that genetically modified crops perform as advertised.”

6. GMOs undermine our food security. Within the biotechnology market, Monsanto alone controls 90 percent of GE crops worldwide. And Monsanto is one of three GMO companies including DuPont and Syngenta that control 70 percent of the global seed market, reinforcing monopoly power over our food. GMO seeds are costly and must be purchased every year, so they worsen farmers’ indebtedness, dependency, and vulnerability to hunger.

7. GMOs aren’t needed in the first place, so why would we take on these risks and harms? Studies show that safe, sustainable farming practices applied worldwide could increase our food supply as much as 50 percent. And keep in mind that the world’s alreadyproducing 2,800 calories for every person on earth every day — more than enough. And that’s just with what’s left over after using half the world’s grain for feed, fuel and other purposes, and wasting one-third of all food. So the urgent question isn’t about “more” anyway. It is, How can all of the world’s people gain the power to secure healthy food? And a good start is knowing what’s in our food.

Shopping in the Know (Not GMO)

• Avoid processed foods! It’s a simple way to reduce exposure to the four most common GM ingredients: non-organic forms of soy, canola, cottonseed and corn, including high-fructose corn syrup.
• Look for the voluntary “non-GMO” label.
• Buy “certified organic,” which ensures that no GMO ingredients were used.
• Visit www.NonGMOShoppingGuide.com for a list of thousands of GMO products and brands.

To sort more food myths from facts, visit the new Food MythBusters: the Real Story About What We Eat website at FoodMyths.Org. And, if you live in California, vote Nov. 6 for Proposition 37 to require GMO labeling.

Speak out, wherever you are. Demand federal GMO labeling and work to end GMOs.

♦      What is Citricidal®? – it is a natural chemical compound synthesized from the seed and pulp of certified, organically-grown grapefruit. The manufacturing process converts grapefruit bioflavonoids into an extremely potent compound (active ingredient naringenin is a flavanone, a subclass of flavonoids) that has been proven highly effective in numerous health applications used by healthcare professionals worldwide.

♦      No other known antibiotic exhibits such safety and versatility – GSE is highly active against many disease-causing pathogens, including protozoa, bacteria, yeast and some viruses. GSE can be administered for up to several months, which may be necessary for some stubborn, chronic infections. GSE is also being used to benefit pets and animals of all sizes. Its uses are only limited by ones imagination.

♦      Relative Potency of Anti-Microbial Agents – This Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Study was used to evaluate the relative potency of Citricidal® compared to other antimicrobial agents. It demonstrates Citricidal® to be a minimum of ten times(10X) to one hundred times (100X) more effective than other agents tested against the organisms used in this study.

Effectiveness of GSE Compared to other Biocides

♦      GSE shown effective in treating hundreds of different microorganisms organisms (both gram-negativeand gram-positive) – including Shigella, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Giardia lamblia,Streptococcus pneumonia,  Haemophilus influenzae, Mycobacterium species, Campylobacter,Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Proteus, Vibio cholerae, Chlamydia trachomatis (obligate intracellular bacteria), Trichomonas vaginalis (protozoa), Legionella pneumophila, Helicobacter pylori,  Herpes simplex 1, Influenza A2, and measles virus.

♦      How Does GSE Destroy Bacteria? – using Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) it was evident that GSE disrupts the bacterial cell membrane, releasing its cytoplasmic contents within 15 minutes of contact. At 1:256 dilution GSE is bactericidal and toxic, but at 1: >512 dilution GSE is bactericidal, but also completely nontoxic.

Heggers JP et al, The Effectiveness of Processed Grapefruit-Seed Extract as An Antibacterial Agent: II. Mechanism of Action and In Vitro Toxicity, J. of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2002.

♦      Does GSE harm beneficial intestinal flora in the intestines? – One study found that GSE significantly inhibited E. coli (a normal inhabitant of the GI tract), but left the important and beneficial Bifidobacteria unchanged, and only slightly reduced the Lactobacilli  species. The conclusion is that typically recommended doses of GSE do not significantly affect intestinal and urogenital flora, while massive GSE doses are likely to compromise beneficial flora. GSE may actually assist the growth of the beneficial bacteria by inhibiting pathogenic microbes which compete with the beneficial flora.

♦      If used long-term, it may be necessary to take a Probiotic with GSE – just as synthetic antibiotics can kill off the naturally occurring flora in the body, so might GSE if it is used long-term in the treatment of a chronic infection, in which case it may be necessary to take a good probiotic supplement.

Take GSE between meals, and probiotics 20-30 minutes before meals – As with anything, consistency and persistence are the keys to success.

♦      GSE is used against Immunodeficiency related diseases – to defend against fungi, bacteria, viruses, parasites or secondary infections that are common in those suffering from immunodeficiency diseases such as HIV positive (Aids) and Chronic fatigue syndrome.  GSE’s broad spectrum anti-pathogenic activity relieves the immune system of an enormous burden.

♦      GSE is successfully used against Mold and Yeast Fungus –  which are just as disease-causing as bacteria and viruses. An estimated 50% of those who are sick have some type of fungal disease. Fungal diseases in the body are more likely with an impaired immune system, which is caused partly by overuse of strong antibiotics and CORTISONE, stress, environmental toxins, unbalanced or insufficient nutrition, food additives, steroids, birth control pills, chlorinated water, etc., which provide an opportunity for fungal growth by offsetting the natural balance of intestinal bacteria. Molds and yeast fungi assist in the development of cardiovascular disease, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, asthma, allergies, sinusitis, gastritis, tuberculosis, cancer, and more.

♦      Avoid mycotoxins – Mold fungi by-products produce some of the strongest poisons known, called mycotoxins. Many of these molds can be found in food or damp musty areas.

If sick, you should avoid foods containing mycotoxins – which can further weaken your immune system and actually feed Candida Albicans. In Germany, it is estimated that 7-12 thousand people die annually of fungal infections.

Some of the more common mycotoxins include:

–       Aflatoxin – one of the most potent carcinogens known; in beer, peanuts, brazil nuts, bulk grains, bread more than a few days old and overripe fruit. A large dose of aflatoxin can debilitate the liver for years, reducing it’s ability to detoxify.

–       Patulin – deadly mycotoxin associated with cancer; in overripe apples and other overripe fruit

–       Zearalenone – a corn mold which occurs in brown rice, popcorn and corn chips.

–       Ergot – associated with cancer and occurs in whole grain products, processed honey and alcoholic beverages.

♦      GSE is one of the best non-toxic remedies for Candida – According to worldwide reports from holistic physicians and thousands of their patientsIn addition, GSE can simultaneously detoxify the system of other fungi, bacteria and parasites that often go hand-in-hand with Candida.

  CANDIDIASIS – Candida Albicans/Yeast Infection

♦      Can germs become resistant to Grapefruit Seed Extract as they can to antibiotics?
There is no evidence that any type of microorganism has ever developed a resistance to Citricidal®.

♦      How long can I safely take grapefruit extract? – You can safely take GSE over a long period, if needed, without any worry of toxicity. People have taken GSE every day for years (as a preventative) without side-effects of any kind. An example of a need for long-term use is for a long- standing parasite infection, which could take quite some time to overcome.

♦      Does GSE interfere with High Blood Pressure Medication? – There are no reports of any drug interactions or contraindications of any kind. Drinking fresh grapefruit juice or eating grapefruits when taking certain medications has increased medication absorption, but GSE contains 0.1% or less of the compounds that cause this phenomenon.

Uses for TRIPLE STRENGTH Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)

♦      Professional, triple strength GSE is the most potent form of GSE available (60 Grapefruit compound : 40 Glycerin) – It is 3 times the potency of the GSE usually sold in retail outlets (E.g. Nutribiotic GSE) .Average dose is only 3-5 drops; a 1 oz. bottle of GSE contains ~1000 drops.

Warnings

♦      Always prepare GSE according to dosage recommendations.♦      Any mixtures that are used for spraying should be mixed very thoroughly before spraying and between sprayings – GSE has a tendency to settle to the bottom after sitting for long periods of time thus making it stronger towards the bottom of container.

♦      Never take GSE full-strength! – Always dilute with water or juice.

♦      If GSE gets into the eyes, flush them out immediately with plenty of water (warm if possible) – for 15 minutes.

♦      After an excessive ingestion of GSE, drink plenty of water – Consult a physician if necessary.

♦      If you have ulcers or a sensitive stomach take GSE after meals – until stomach adjusts to the extract and then you can take it independent of meals. Note: Ulcers are very sensitive to irritation, caution must be taken when using GSE if irritation persists discontinue use, as ulcers can be a very serious condition.

♦      If you are allergenic, a patch test is recommended to be sure.

♦      If your water source is heavily mineralized or chlorinated slightly increase dosages.

♦      Individual doses are subject to increase or decrease – according to individual tolerance, severity of condition, and results of previous doses. It is best to increase frequency of dose rather than increase the size of the dose by more than 2-3 times.

♦      To overcome bitter taste – mix GSE with vegetable, fruit and citrus juices, citrus is especially good. Best way is to add it to your daily green drink – you won’t even taste it in there!

♦      Herxheimer Reaction -The dosages of GSE can be continued for 1-3 months or longer, according to the intensity and extent of the disease. It is advisable to start with smaller doses of GSE and increase slowly. When bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens begin to die, toxins are set free, which can possibly cause headaches, nausea and fatigue that can last several weeks. If such a reaction occurs, it is recommended that you decrease the dose or keep it low and increase it very slowly, adjusting as necessary to reach a maintenance level.

INTERNAL USES
GSE proves to be an excellent and safe remedy for skin diseases, external injuries, fungal infections, internal diseases caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. The animal’s intestinal flora (essential to its immune system) is often damaged by antibiotics, but GSE has been shown to be less damaging. Some animal owners give a preventative dose on a regular basis. In acute cases, the dosage can be increased dramatically without ill effects, but it is wise to increase the dosage frequency rather than increase the size of dose by more the 2 or 3 times. GSE is extremely good for speedy healing and disinfecting cuts and scrapes. If in doubt, consult a veterinarian.Animal Weight / GSE Internal Use Dosage Chart

Add dose to animal’s food or 1 cup of their water.

Give a non-sick animal the maintenance dose once per day. If treating animal for a disorder, then give the maintenance dosage 3 times per day.  Doses can be increased up to 5 times per day in acute cases.

To prevent immune system becoming lazy on maintenance dose, stop treatment one week out of every three weeks.

¼ tsp. = 30 drops

MAINTENANCE / PREVENTATIVE DOSE For a non-sick animal, give the maintenance dose for the animal’s size once per day to protect against infectious diseases. If your animal has been treated for a disease or condition, then give a dose half as much as for the treatment for the disease or condition to prevent its return. Promotes good coat and skin health. See Dosage Chart above.
ANTIBIOTIC / DISORDERS caused by BACTERIA, VIRUSES, PARASITES or FUNGI Give the animal the maintenance dose for its size in its food or into 1 cup of water, 3-5 times daily.  (See Animal Weight / GSE Internal Use Dosage Chart  above).
PARASITES / WORMS Give dose recommended for parasites to animal every day for a week.Repeat after 2 weeks and again after 4 weeks, then put animal on half the treatment dosage to prevent parasites from returning. (See Dosage Chart above).
BAD BREATH Mix 3-4 drops in 1 cup water and spray into the animal’s mouth 2 times daily. Expect a dramatic improvement after a few days. Also allow pet to drink the water.
FUNGAL DISEASE of the MOUTH Mix 7-10 drops in 1 qt of water and spray directly into the mouth 2-3 times daily. Also put pet on maintenance dose above.
DIARRHEA / BLADDER INFECTION / INCONTINENCE Often caused by spoiled food,  worms (parasites) or harmful bacteria. Put the animal on a 24-hour liquid diet (vegetable broth and lots of water). Use maintenance dosage in Animal Weight / GSE Internal Doses chart above. Repeat in 2-3 hours, then put pet on maintenance dosage above.
ARTHRITIS Give recommended maintenance dose 3 times daily between meals. If arthritis is related to germs, making GSE an appropriate solution, then you should see improvement in 4-8 weeks, after which give half dosage for a few more weeks, then put animal on maintenance dose. Giving probiotic cultures with meals to improve good bacteria levels in the intestines will help prevent recontamination. (See Animal Weight / GSE Internal Use Dosage Chart above).
EXTERNAL USES

Doses can be increased/decreased as necessary

Warnings – Any mixtures that are used for spraying should be mixed very thoroughly before spraying and between sprayings. GSE has a tendency to settle making it stronger at the bottom of the container, which may irritate, swell or burn an animal‘s tongue, if licked. If GSE gets into the animal’s eyes, flush them out immediately with plenty of water (warm if possible) for 15 minutes and consult a veterinarian if necessary.
CLEANING DISINFECTANT Mix 10-16 drops to 1 qt. of water for cleaning cages, feeding bowls/ troughs, baskets and blankets, etc.
FISH TANK ALGAECIDE Mix 1-2 drops WELL in 2 cups water before adding to tank. Allow a day to evaluate algae decrease and repeat if necessary, increasing number of drops by 1 each day if necessary, according to results.  Since GSE is very powerful, don’t add more drops than needed or you will kill the fish. GSE is also good for keeping fish healthy from diseases, parasites and fungus.
FLEA / MITE SHAMPOO Shampoo fur thoroughly with a mix of 3-10 drops per Tbsp. and leave on for several minutes before rinsing well. Repeat the process after 3 days. For stubborn cases rub in a few drops added to a little olive or vegetable oil 2 times daily. Do not allow animal to lick this highly concentrated mixture, which may irritate or burn animal’s tongue.
EAR MITES / INFECTIONS To clean ear thoroughly mix NO MORE THAN 1 drop  in 1 oz. (1/8 cup) water or vegetable glycerin. Use times daily until problem is gone, then clean once a month. Very effective  for cat’s fungal ear infections.
MANGE / FUNGAL INFECTION Use flea / mite shampoo mix above OR rub a mix of 3 drops in 1 Tbsp.vegetable or olive oil on affected area every 2-3 days until condition improves.
PET ODORS Spray body with a mix 3-5 drops in 1 quart water. Effective. Do not to get it in the animal’s eyes-see warning above.
RINGWORM (A fungal infection) Spray a mix of 1 tsp. GSE to 5 Tbsp. water or rub a mix of 1 tsp. in 5 Tbsp.olive or vegetable oil on affected area 3-4 times daily. Do not get it in the animal’s eyes, see warning above.
CUTS / WOUNDS Spray wound liberally and often with a mixture of 1 tsp. GSE in ½ cup distilled or cooled, boiled water in a clean spray bottle. A deep wound requires a more diluted solution. See a veterinarian for severe wounds.
SICK BIRDS Thoroughly Mix 1 drop into ½ cup drinking water to eliminate internal parasites. For health maintenance add 1 drop thoroughly mixed in cup of drinking water. All birds including chickens, turkeys, parakeets.
SKIN FUNGI or BACTERIAL DISEASE Spray affected area with a well mixed solution of 10-15 drops GSE in 2 cupswater. Do not get it in the animal’s eyes, see warning above.
TURTLES / REPTILES / AMPHIBIANS These pets can harbor Salmonella. To disinfect cages and hands etc., spray them with a thorough mix of drops in 2 cups water. If you think pet is ill and possibly suffering from parasites, salmonella etc. then try adding GSE to their water according to the fish tank recommendation above. Or use 1 drop per cup water.

How Does Foam Rolling Work?

Posted on May 2, 2013 by Todd Hargrove
“Thank You Todd Hargrove for your great article, I wanted to share it with as many people as possible”.

This part only by ,  Suzanne Newman, ” ALWAYS BUY THE BLACK FOAM ROLLERS.  THE WHITE ONES DO NOT HOLD UP UNDER WEIGHT FOR LONG! MY FAVORITE ARE, TRIGGERPOINT ROLLERS, IN MY VIEW ARE BY FAR THE BEST”!

Foam rolling is very popular. Athletic trainers use it as a part of the warm-up. Physical therapists use it as part of their treatment strategy, often to improve extensibility of “short” tissues.

There is very limited evidence about what benefit, if any, foam rolling confers. But there are at least a few studies showing that it leads to short term increases in range of motion that are not accompanied by strength loss. (This is interesting because stretching interventions tend to show increased range of motion that are associated with a loss of strength and power.)

The purpose of this article is not to question whether foam rolling is effective for anything. I’m willing to assume that it is effective in some way for some people. It is hard for me to believe that so many intelligent trainers such as Mike Boyle would be singing its praises unless it was good for something. So I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt for purposes of this article.

The question that I want to answer in this post is the following: if foam rolling does work to reduce pain or improve mobility, what is the mechanism? I do not find the common explanations very convincing. But there is one (less commonly heard) explanation which I really like. Here’s my critical analysis of the different theories for why foam rolling works, including my favorite one.

1. Does foam rolling “improve tissue quality”?

This is one you will hear quite frequently, usually without any specifics as to which “qualities” are at issue. I think some people imagine that foam rolling can somehow smooth out bumps or incongruities in their tissues like a rolling pin over pizza dough. Of course, this explanation is usually intended for lay people and not scientists, so perhaps we can cut some slack about the lack of specifics. Perhaps the qualities to be improved involve the presence of fascial adhesions or trigger points. I’ll address those claims specifically below.

2. Does foam rolling lengthen or “melt” fascia?

For some reason people just tend to assume that foam rolling works by changing the fascia. I honestly have no idea why. A foam roller puts pressure on all the other tissues in the body, and they all communicate with the CNS, which controls how we move and feel. Isn’t the CNS the most obvious place to look for changes after foam rolling?

No, it always has to be the fascia!

But fascia is tough stuff. Sure it has some interesting adaptive properties, but at the end of the day its purpose is to form a solid structure for the body. Is it really plausible that we can significantly change our structure just by leaning on a foam roller a little bit? We must be made of stronger stuff than that. If fascia started to break down, or elongate, or “melt” every time it felt a little sustained pressure, we would be pretty fragile creatures. Like Frosty the Snowman in the hothouse. Every time we went camping without a thermarest we would wake up in the morning with one side longer than the other. So for me the idea that foam rolling lengthens or melts some important structural stuff in our body does not pass the common sense test.

And, more importantly, the research does not support this idea either. There are a few research studies (here and here) which try to determine the degree of pressure necessary to cause permanent deformation in mature human connective tissue. The upshot is that if you want permanent change, you better be prepared (as Paul Ingraham notes) to “get medieval.” Steam roller maybe, foam roller, no. It’s not going to happen in any of the places where the roller is most commonly applied, which are usually the strongest parts of the body – the ITB band, lumbar fascia, plantar fascia, etc.

 3. Does foam rolling break up fascial adhesions?

Maybe a foam roller can’t lengthen the IT band, which is stronger than steel, but could it break up some little fascial adhesions that prevent sliding between different muscle groups? One of the studies I referenced above show that manual pressure might be enough to deform nasal fascia. Now I don’t see many people foam rolling their nose, but maybe there are tiny little adhesions between large muscles groups that are as weak and deformable as nasal fascia.

Again this seems highly speculative to me. How do we know where these adhesions are, or what angle will help break them? A foam roller is a blunt non specific instrument that delivers force in a diffuse manner into the tissue. Smash! Part of the job of fascia is to diffuse force, so it would be hard to target a specific point here. Also, the angle of pressure is always straight in. Smash! The foam roller would have limited ability to provide the kind of precise oblique force that might be able to slide one layer of tissue with respect to the other.

Another problem I have with the idea that foam rolling breaks up fascial adhesions is that the effects are often temporary. People do some foam rolling, they feel better for a while, and then tomorrow or even later that same day, they feel the need to roll the same area again. If the mechanism of effect is breaking fascial adhesions, then why do we need to repeat the process? Did the fascia knit itself back together again? The temporary nature of the results strongly suggests a nervous system mediated mechanism for efficacy, not a structural one.

3.  Does foam rolling get rid of trigger points?

Many foam rolling proponents explain that proper procedure involves finding a “trigger point” and staying on that point for a while. Is foam rolling a way to treat trigger points?

It should be noted that the term trigger point means different things to different people. For some it just means a sore spot, but for others it refers to a specific pathology. The definition involves several elements such as a hyperirritable nodule within a palpably taut band that elicits a twitching response to snapping palpation. Trigger points are thought to be caused by some sort of metabolic crisis in the muscle cells which causes chemical irritation in the local area and for some unknown reason refer pain to other areas when pressed.

Trigger points are controversial to say the least. There is substantial debate as to whether they even exist. Whether they can be reliably identified is another debate. And whether they can be effectively treated is another. There are many recommended treatments – stretching, post-isometric relaxation, sticking needles into them, pressing on them, etc. I definitely don’t have the time or anything approaching the knowledge to address all these debates.

But given all these uncertainties, I’m disinclined to believe that foam rolling works by getting rid of a trigger point. There are just too many unanswered questions here. The experts in trigger point therapy will tell you that not every sore spot is a trigger point, that not all trigger points are clinically relevant, and that their identification and treatment takes practice and expertise. So I don’t think shotgun fascia smashing with a foam roller is a plausible trigger point treatment (assuming they exist and can be treated with pressure.)

4. Does foam rolling work by proprioceptive stimulation?

I often hear claims that foam rolling works by proprioceptive enhancement – stimulating mechanoreceptors in the muscles and/or fascia, such as golgi tendon organs, or muscle spindle fibers, or ruffinis, or pacinis, or Pacinos or DeNiros. This could have some beneficial effect of encouraging relaxation of muscular or fascial tone, or causing the brain to reorganize its sensory or movement maps in the local area.

I think this is a very plausible explanation and definitely on the right track. But I doubt it is the main mechanism which explains why people like to foam roll. If stimulating these mechanoreceptors explains the claimed benefits of foam rolling, then why wouldn’t you just stretch and move around, and get probably even more stimulation to these organs, but within the context of functional movements? Can the foam roller, which doesn’t really provide that much movement or stretch to the target muscle or fascia, provide more proprioceptive stimulation then functional movements like the squat, lunge or reach? I think not.

Perhaps what foam rolling has to offer over movement is novel proprioceptive stimulation. I think novelty is great and of huge potential benefit. It helps get the brain’s attention, which is what you need to do if you want the brain to change. But here’s something else that you need to do. You need to provide the brain with information that is relevant to something that the brain cares about. The brain cares about how to move your body through functional patterns such as squats, lunges and hip hinges. How is the information derived from foam rolling relevant to these tasks? The brain is not interested in information just because it’s novel. The information must also help it solve movement problems. Why would the nervous system be interested in how it feels to have a lacrosse ball jammed into your butt?

5. Does foam rolling work by diffuse noxious inhibitory control?

The winner! And this is probably the mechanism with which readers will have the least familiarity. Here’s a description of what it is, how it works, and why I think its the major reason for the potential efficacy of foam rolling (and many other forms of manual therapy).

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC) is one of several varieties of “descending modulation”, by which the brain adjusts the “volume” on nociception (danger signals which originate in the body). DNIC means that the brain inhibits nociceptive signals from traveling up the spinal cord to the brain.

DNIC is reliably triggered by a sustained nociceptive input, such as immersing your hand in cold water. The inhibition is diffuse – it suppresses nociception not just from the local area, but distant areas as well. In other words, if your leg hurts, and you stick your hand in icewater for a while, the resulting DNIC will cause both the hand and the leg to hurt less. This dynamic of fighting pain in one area by creating it in another likely explains the success of many therapies, and is sometimes called counterirritation. The effect is temporary of course.

How powerful is the effect of DNIC? Very powerful. When a soldier loses a limb in battle, he will often feel no pain so long as the emergency persists, and DNIC is a major reason. David Butler refers to DNIC as the “drug cabinet in the brain.” Here’s a video where he explains this idea in a little more detail, including the fact that some of the drugs in the brain are stronger than morphine.

There is significant research showing that many chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and TMJ are characterized by relative failure of the DNIC mechanism.

New research shows that the effectiveness of DNIC in suppressing pain is highly dependent on theexpectation that the counterirritant will have an analgesic affect. In this interesting study, researchers immersed the hands of participants in cold water, shocked them with an electric blast to the sural nerve, and then measured the level of nociceptive activity in the spine, as well as the self-reported pain level. Importantly, the participants were divided into two groups. The first group, called the “analgesia group”, was told that the cold water immersion would reduce the amount of pain they felt from the shock. The other group, called the “hyperalgesia group” was told the opposite – that the cold water immersion would make the pain in the leg worse.

The analgesia group experienced 77% less pain, and less spinal cord nociceptive activity than the hyperalgesia group, who experienced almost no reductions in pain or spinal cord nociceptive activity. In other words, expectation of relief is a huge factor in determining whether you will get some DNIC from a painful stimulus.

Pain expert Lorimer Moseley views descending modulation and DNIC as a way for the brain to “second-guess” the periphery about the threat posed by a particular stimulus. For example, if the periphery is communicating information suggesting there is a large amount of mechanical threat in a particular area, the brain, which has access to a wealth of additional information about what is actually going on in the periphery, may decide that the problem is not so serious, and therefore inhibit the transmission of nociceptive signals to the brain.

Now let’s put this all together. DNIC is a powerful but temporary way to reduce pain in one area by creating pain in another. It depends on a decision by the brain to ignore danger signals from the body. Expectation of benefit from the irritating stimulus plays a strong role.

There are several aspects of foam rolling that are very consistent with the hypothesis that its main benefit is achieved by creating DNIC. Rule number one in foam rolling is to find a sore spot and stay on it for some time. You need to create some pain. Of course, the pain is often a “good pain”, which is exactly the type of feeling that would correlate with the brain’s conclusion that the irritation is somehow beneficial – which is what gets DNIC going.

Foam rolling often creates pain relief, not just in the area of pressure, but in other areas as well. People also tend to feel more freedom of motion, which could easily be explained by suppression of nociceptive activity, which tends to create muscle guarding, stiffness, and compensatory patterns of movement.

Further, the results of foam rolling are often temporary and need to be repeated (and often repeated harder the next time- are people becoming addicted to the drug cabinet in the brain?) This suggests a CNS mediated mechanism.

So here is the story I tell about foam rolling. You put a foam roller into your butt and create some significant nociceptive signalling. The brain receives it and says something like: OK the butt is telling me that there is some danger down there right now. But I happen to know that this is a therapeutic situation because Dr. Oz said so. So I’ll send some drugs down the spinal cord to block all this talk about danger. And, we’ll make this feel like a “good” pain not an injury. The drugs reduce pain and thereby improve movement temporarily.

Make sense?

Practical implications

Now some people will read this and say “well who cares about how it works, all I care about is that it works.” And in some sense that is fine, but this lack of curiosity ignores the potential improvements one might make to a therapeutic regime by understanding the real mechanism of effect.

If foam rolling really works by nothing other than DNIC, then perhaps it would be easier to get the same effect by just pinching yourself or putting your hand in ice water. Or maybe this would mess with expectations, which we know are important to get the effect.

Here’s another interesting question that arises from the consideration that foam rolling may work purely on the basis of DNIC. If the results are only temporary, can there be any progressive benefit? I think the answer is: it depends. Pain relief and improved movement open a window of opportunity that one might climb through. If you are feeling better only for an hour, this provides enough time to train movements that would not normally be accessible, learn new skills, develop new capacities, and reduce the perceived threat associated with certain movements. This could have permanent benefit. But of course if you just sit on the couch, the benefits would probably be temporary.

Here’s another question I have in regard to foam rolling. If the major reason it works is release of the drug cabinet in the brain, then can one become addicted? I have no real evidence of this, but I swear I’ve seen a disturbing pattern. Someone gets relief from a foam roller, and then graduates to the lacrosse ball, and then to the wooden ball, until they are bruising themselves with steel in an effort to get that fix! Avoiding this type of situation is one reason it’s a good idea to know why something works.

Conclusion

Well there’s a lot more to be said here, but I am out of time, and if you have already read this far you are a champion!

I’m sure some of my readers will point out that I missed one or two great explanations for why foam rolling works. If I did, then please post in the comments and I’ll try to address it in a further post.

One way or the other, let me know what you think in the comments. And pass this around!

Learn Self Applied Balls In Sock Massage Technique

  • Learn self applied massage, balls in sock technique to release trigger points. Trigger points are areas of pain throughout the body they can often be felt as a lump or can cause a twitch. To see if you have a trigger point push on the suspected spot.  A trigger point is more than a tender nodule. It affects not only the muscle where the trigger point is located, but also causes “referred pain” in tissues supplied by nerves. Trigger points are located in a taut band of muscles fibers. The trigger point is the most tender point in the band. If it is a trigger point it will be more tender or sting & the referred pain will increase. When you locate and deactivate them using using my balls in a sock self applied technique and massage therapy.

  •   There is nothing worse than trigger points they can cause gluteal pain,  pain in your mid scapula/shoulder blade, mid and lower back and hip pain.  I have had clients with knots that they thought might have been tumors. Trigger points can occur from improper breathing, stress and repetitive sports and motion. What seems to be knots occur and they can cause debilitating pain. I always suggest to people the strong need with the stresses of today to get a massage therapy once a month. These so called knots can be prevented if we do not wait until we reach a chronic stage. The self applied techniques with  balls in a sock can help you to help yourself.
  •   This is how to get to  those hard to reach areas that need to to have pressure point release/ trigger point release.  Take a tennis ball/golf ball/ Lacrosse ball-( remember the amount of  pain you can tolerate! ) Always using static pressure, which means direct pressure not rolling around on the balls. This is not going to feel joyful it will hurt but, it should be a good hurt and DO NOT put the balls on your spine. If you are having mid back pain have the balls on either side of the spine.
  • Setting up: Put the balls in the sock on a hardwood floor or very low pile carpet. Then you have to situate the balls onto the point of pain and you will know this because it will hurt there. If you move an inch up you might not feel any pain, that is letting you know you are off the trigger point that you need to have the ball/balls on. Once you are on that spot lower your body gradually allowing more and more pressure and remember to breath. Stay there statically as long as the pain persists. It can take up to 30 second to a minute for the trigger point to release and sometimes the relief is amazing! Your balls in a sock self applied massage can go anywhere with you too.
  • You can also do this while you are sitting in a hard chair and yes… sit on it!  There are a lot of Trigger Points that you can release so experiment. When you go directly into the pain with a tennis ball, golf ball, elbow or Massage tool they release after a short period of time, which is called Trigger Point Therapy. I use this method in your Massage treatment) You can position the ball (Tennis or Golf) against the back of your chair by your shoulder blades and lean into the ball.
  • The Glutes are an area of high tightness. Yes we are all a bunch of tight asses! This is either from sitting to much or it can be from sports too. Get out your  yoga mat and use on of the balls in you set and again with static pressure apply to the area’s from the hip and follow the top of your sacrum and then directly into the sides of your glutes/butt. This does hurt but it certainly can help from getting sciatica to major low back pain. It will help you trust me here.

 How to make this contraption:

  • Take two balls Tennis, Golf  or lacrosse balls  put one ball into the toe of the stocking and I tie three knots. then you put the other same type of ball in  and tie the end close to the ball in another knot and cut the rest of the stocking off. . Remember to pull the balls close enough together to fit your back so that the balls are on either side of the spine. NOT ON THE SPINE. Locate the area of pain and fix the balls so they are directly on the painful spot and allow your body weight to push into the Trigger Point for relief. It is always good to have a helper but learning these self applied massage  techniques to help yourself, with balls in a sock.
  • Please click on the bodies below to enlarge to see where trigger points are located:
